Don: Eel scientist

  • Hello this morning the Batten team listened to Don who was telling us about ells. The first thing he told us was that shortfin eels like eating crabs. You can tell that a eel has eaten a crab by looking at the bottom of it. When you look at the bottom of it and it is red it means that it has eaten a crab. The second thing was that It takes 7-10 months for a baby eel to get back to New Zealand and it takes 5-6 months for an adult eel to get to Tonga. When an eel is  swimming it can look backwards well swimming fords.
  • These are some of the interesting things that we learnt about eels

  • Eels eat little baby ducklings
  • Eels can smell their pray from about 4 meters away.
  • There are 19 species of eels in the world.
  • Females can grow up to 3 meters long.
  • Eels teeth face backwards.
  • When an eel catches its prey there is know way for the prey to escape.
  • A really big eel can give birth to 50 million eggs.
  • If you see a longfin eel with dots on it it means that it is a Australian longfin eel.
  • Eels can swim backwards and forwards.
